Sobeys announced Monday that it has partnered with the UK firm Ocado Group to launch an online grocery store in Canada.

The Nova Scotia based grocery chain said the online grocery shopping platform will be built on the Ocado Smart Platform. The platform will allow customers to shop for groceries online or via an ordering app and have their order processed, and delivered to their door.

The company said the first Customer Fulfillment Centre (CFC) will be located in the Greater Toronto Area and will take about two years to build. Sobeys also said it will consider developing additional CFCs in urban areas – but did not provide a timetable on expanding the service.

“Sobeys intends to play to win in Canadian online grocery shopping. We are very excited to bring this best-in-the-world grocery e-commerce experience to Canadian customers,” Sobeys CEO Michael Medline said in a release. “Our end-to-end e-commerce solution will allow Sobeys to build an online offer in a manner that is profitable and creates exceptional value for our customers, investors and supplier partners.”
