The Campbell Soup Company is shutting down its 87-year-old manufacturing plant in Toronto.

The company says it plans to move its Canadian headquarters and commercial operations to a new location in the Greater Toronto Area.

The closure, which will occur in phases over the next 18 months, will result in approximately 380 job losses. Campbell employs approximately 600 people in the Toronto area.

Campbell says it will continue to make soup and broth recipes tailored to Canadian tastes, but production will be consolidated into the company’s existing U.S. manufacturing network.

Originally opened in 1931, Toronto is the oldest plant in the Campbell thermal network, but due to its size and age, the company says the facility is not competitively viable.

Affected employees will be offered support from the company to assist with the transition in the form of severance packages as well as career counseling, job fairs and on-site financial planning workshops, among other benefits.

About 200 jobs among the 600 positions at the Toronto facility will be relocated to the new headquarters.

Site selection for the new GTA facility is currently underway.
