For the first time in 33 years, Oakville’s annual polar bear dip has been cancelled due to safety concerns over ice and rocky conditions at Coronation Park.

The announcement was made by organizers via Facebook on Monday.

“We regret to announce #NewYearsDay 2018 Courage #PolarBearDip For World Vision Canada clean has been CANCELLED by authorities/organizers. Significant ice/rock movement overnight at planned dip site makes it unsafe. All donations will still go to World Vision clean water projects.”

Organizers had been expecting as many as 700 people to take the plunge.

Yesterday, the Toronto Polar Bear Club announced it was cancelling its long running New Year’s Day dip into Lake Ontario at Sunnyside Beach due to ice conditions.
