Bell targets cord-cutters with the launch of Alt TV, the company’s new app-based live TV service that doesn’t require a traditional TV subscription or set-top box.

Alt TV features access to up to 500 live and on-demand channels on smartphones, home computers, tablets and streaming devices such as Apple TV – 4th Generation.

Starting at $14.95 per month for an entry-level package of about 30 channels – including the major Canadian and US networks – Alt TV will initially be available to Bell Fibe Internet subscribers with download speeds of at least 25 megabits per second. Bell says Alt TV offers access to 2 TV streams at a time “without the need to worry about data usage or fees when viewing the service at home.”

The live TV streaming service also offers more expensive packages with an option to subscribe to individual channels a la carte.

“The ways Canadians watch television continue to evolve, and Alt TV is another example of how Bell’s scale and industry-leading investment consistently deliver the latest viewing innovations to consumers,” said Wade Oosterman, group president of Bell Canada.

Alt TV will be offered to Internet customers in Ontario and Quebec with plans to later expand availability in Atlantic Canada and Manitoba. Bell also plans to offer availability on Android TV later this year.
