CBC Orders New Female Detective Series From Producers Of ‘Murdoch Mysteries’

A new female detective series set in the 1920s from the producers of “Murdoch Mysteries” is coming to the CBC. The public broadcaster says Shaftesbury’s “Frankie Drake” will begin production this summer for a fall 2017 launch.

Created by “Murdoch Mysteries” writers Carol Hay and Michelle Ricci, and starring Lauren Lee Smith, the 11-episode series follows Toronto’s only female private detective, Frankie Drake, as she takes on cases the police don’t want or can’t handle. With a knack for solving crimes, Frankie and her partner Trudy take on cases of all shapes and sizes, from airplanes and booze running to American G-men, Communists and union busters.

“Frankie Drake is a forward-thinking drama about a woman ahead of her time, challenging convention and the status quo during a period of sweeping change, not unlike our own times,” said Sally Catto, general manager, programming, CBC.

“Frankie Drake” is executive produced by Christina Jennings, Scott Garvie and Cal Coons, who also serves as showrunner. The series is produced by Jonathan Hackett and Julie Lacey.

In 2017, Lauren was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Maggie Lawson in CBC’s This Life.
