An Oshawa, Ontario man is recovering from emergency surgery after shooting himself in the leg while making a necklace out of a live bullet.

According to Durham Regional Police, the 50-year-old man was attempting to pull apart a bullet with vice grips when the bullet exploded just after 5 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. No word as to whether or not the necklace was being made for a sweetheart.

Police say the powder inside the bullet ignited, which triggered an explosion sending the bullet, as well as casing fragments into the man’s thigh and parts of his leg.

The man told police that he didn’t realize the bullet could explode.

Police say the man was taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery to remove the bullet and casing fragments from his leg.

Police are reminding residents not to manipulate ammunition as it still has the potential to explode.
